These parks have tennis courts, athletic fields, walking paths, and swimming pools. Johnson City is just a short trip from several state parks and the Appalachian Trail. Within a short drive from the city, you can be near the Nolichucky River or Cherokee Lake which is perfect for whitewater rafting, boating, swimming, fishing, hiking and biking. In the winter, you can also drive a short distance be near the North Carolina ski areas and enjoy skiing and snow boarding. In downtown Johnson City TN there are many great little shops and restaurants that offer everything from a casual dining experience to full gourmet cuisines. The Hands On! Museum is also a popular spot downtown and a great place to take the kids. This museum lets children explore the sciences and humanities through hands on, interactive exhibits. The city is also home to many historic sites from the American Revolution and the Civil War. The Tip ton-Hayes Historical Site was the home of John Tip ton, a member of the 1776 Constitutional Convention. Johnson City Tennessee is also home to the birthplace of both President Andrew Jackson and Davy Crockett. Both of these sites have tours and historical markers denoting the places and events. Johnson City Tennessee is also very close to Bristol Motor Speedway, which features NASCAR racing events and many other car events. Also located in Bristol is Bristol Caverns, a fun place to visit and learn more about caverns and cave structures.
